Proliferative Disorders in Bivalve Mollusks

نویسنده

  • C. AUSTIN FARLEY
چکیده

A collection of proliferative disorders in mollusks has been assembled over a period of years through pathologic studies of epizootic neoplastic disease (Christensen. Farley. and Kern. 1974; Farley. 1969b; Farley and Sparks. 1970) and routine histologic studies from many locations (Farley. 1968. 1969b; Farley and Sparks. 1970). Diagnosis and characterization of the neoplastic diseases in mollusks discussed here were accomplished primarily by light microscopy and standar.d staining methods. Recently. the tradItional methods have been supplemented by electron microscopy (Farley. 1976).

Microbial Diseases of Bivalve Mollusks: Infections, Immunology and Antimicrobial Defense

A variety of bivalve mollusks (phylum Mollusca, class Bivalvia) constitute a prominent commodity in fisheries and aquacultures, but are also crucial in order to preserve our ecosystem's complexity and function. Bivalve mollusks, such as clams, mussels, oysters and scallops, are relevant bred species, and their global farming maintains a high incremental annual growth rate, representing a consid...

Spawning & Rearing Bivalve Mollusks:

In this lesson, students will learn methods for spawning bivalve mollusks (e.g. clams or oysters) using thermal induction. Students will acquire skills in using an ocular micrometer to measure the diameter of bivalve eggs and the length of bivalve larvae. The following lesson plan will have students monitoring the density of larvae in their culture system and understanding production protocols ...

Early development of the Japanese spiny oyster (Saccostrea kegaki): characterization of some genetic markers.

The phylum Mollusca is one of the major groups of Lophotrochozoa. Although mollusks exhibit great morphological diversity, only a few comparative embryological studies have been performed on this group. In the present study, to begin understanding the molecular development of the diverse morphology among mollusks, we observed early embryogenesis in a bivalve, the Japanese spiny oyster, Saccostr...

Mid-Neolithic Exploitation of Mollusks in the Guanzhong Basin of Northwestern China: Preliminary Results

Mollusk remains are abundant in archaeological sites in the Guanzhong Basin of Northwestern China, providing good opportunities for investigations into the use of mollusks by prehistoric humans. Here we report on freshwater gastropod and bivalve mollusks covering the time interval from about 5600 to 4500 cal. yrs BP from sites of Mid-Late Neolithic age. They are identified as Cipangopaludina ch...
